Academics Launches New Emergency Medicine Residency Program

19 September 2019

A new residency program in Emergency Medicine was recently approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program will be based at the Ochsner Medical Center and expects to welcome the first class of six learners to begin their training on July 1, 2020. The program is expected to reach the approved full complement of 18 learners in July 2022.

“Our dynamic program offers residents superb, state-of-the-art training at one of the largest private academic medical centers in the South,” said Sal Suau, MD, Program Director. “The program will prepare residents to deliver comprehensive, compassionate, and cost-effective care,” he added.

Emergency medicine is focused on the recognition, evaluation, and care of patients who are injured or acutely ill. It is often within a fast-paced, high-pressure environment that requires a broad base of medical knowledge along with exceptional clinical and technical skills.

The Ochsner Emergency Medicine Residency Program has an emphasis on pre-hospital care and the acute care aspects of the other specialties. It is a fully accredited 3‑year program by ACGME and supports Ochsner’s mission to serve, heal, lead, educate, and innovate. Learners have a training schedule that include anesthesiology, neurovascular and pediatric intensive care, obstetrics, and shock trauma. Also, clinical skills training will include scenarios delivered by the Ochsner Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety Center.

“Our new Emergency Medicine Program has been an Ochsner vision for years and is expected to attract trainees to our region from all around the U.S.,” said Ronald Amedee, MD, Dean of Medical Education and Head of University of Queensland (UQ) Ochsner Clinical School. “Ochsner Academics is honored to have the opportunity to train the next generation of emergency physicians in clinical diagnosis and patient care in the emergency medicine setting,” he added.

The addition of the Emergency Medicine residency brings the total number of Ochsner accredited graduate medical education programs to 30. Since 1942, Ochsner has prepared postgraduate medical residents to meet the challenges of medicine’s future. Today, Ochsner Academics continues to be committed to train our next generation of physicians.
